A fresh render coat on the lower walls of a room following damp proof course work

Recent damp proofing and preservation work

Photographs from real jobs carried out by our own team across North Tyneside, Newcastle and Northumberland. Nothing staged, nothing bought in from a picture library.

Damp proofing is disruptive work, and we think you should see that before booking anyone. These photographs show the real stages, from walls hacked back to brick through to a skimmed finish ready for decoration. Select any photograph to view it full size.

From bare brick to ready to decorate

Most damp proofing jobs follow the same four stages. Here is what you are looking at in the gallery above.

  1. Stage 1

    Hacked back to brick

Salt contaminated plaster is taken off back to sound masonry. It looks drastic, but leaving it in place would let the salts come back through the new finish.

  2. Stage 2

    Damp proof course and membrane

A new chemical damp proof course is injected into the mortar, and tanking membrane is fixed where a wall needs a physical barrier against moisture.

  3. Stage 3

    Render coat

The brown layer in many of the photographs is a salt resistant render. It protects the new finish from any salts left in the brickwork behind it.

  4. Stage 4

    Skimmed and ready to decorate

Once dry, the render is skimmed to a smooth finish and the room is left tidy and ready for decoration.

About the work shown here

Yes. Every photograph on this page was taken on a job carried out by our own team across North Tyneside, Newcastle and Northumberland. Nothing is staged and nothing is bought in from a picture library.

Because the old plaster is usually contaminated with salts that the damp has drawn up out of the ground. If it is left in place, those salts keep attracting moisture and come back through the new finish, so it is removed and replaced with a salt resistant system.

In most cases, yes. People normally stay in the property while we work. Rooms being treated are dust sheeted and tidied daily, and the programme is confirmed in writing with your fixed price so you know the dates before we start.

The new plaster has to dry out before it is decorated, and how long that takes depends on the thickness of the render and the ventilation in the room. We leave every wall ready for decoration and confirm the expected drying time with you on the job.
