Repointing in North Shields and North Tyneside

Raking out failed mortar and repointing in lime or cement to stop penetrating damp.

Understanding repointing

Mortar joints are the weakest part of a brick or stone wall. When they crack, erode or fall out, rain soaks into the wall and shows up inside as penetrating damp. Repointing means raking out the failed mortar and replacing it with a mortar that suits the wall. Older solid walls usually need a breathable lime mortar, while modern cavity walls are normally repointed in cement mortar.
